Safety 101
Before trying anything, take a moment to check for anything unsafe.
If there are clear signs of danger like smoke, sparks, burning, exposed wires, strong electrical smells, fire, flooding, shock risk, or anything that feels urgent, leave everything as-is and contact the appropriate professional or emergency services if needed.
If you notice smoke, burning smells, unusual electrical noises, heat, exposed, damaged, warped, or melted wires, sparks, bulging, signs of liquid damage, scorch marks around outlets or plugs, sharp edges, broken glass, or plastic shards, do not touch, move, or try to fix the device.
If something requires electrical maintenance, repair, or replacement, call the appropriate service. This includes loose, cracked, damaged, or unsafe outlets; sockets that do not hold plugs securely; frayed cords; damaged power bricks; cracked plugs; missing ground prongs; exposed wiring; buzzing; arcing; heat; flickering; burning smells; or repeated power issues. Even low-voltage equipment can involve risk.
Be careful with overloaded outlets, extension cords, power strips, surge protectors, adapters, GFCI/GFI plugs, loose cords, or anything that repeatedly trips or resets. Do not keep testing the same outlet, power strip, breaker, plug, adapter, or setup if it looks, smells, sounds, or feels unsafe.
Do not handle swollen, leaking, punctured, unusually hot, crushed, or damaged batteries. This includes phones, laptops, tablets, remotes, power banks, cameras, controllers, toys, and small electronics. Stop using the device and contact the appropriate professional, manufacturer, or battery disposal guidance.
Use extra caution around water sources. If equipment, cords, outlets, power strips, routers, TVs, or other devices are near sinks, tubs, wet floors, leaks, damp areas, outdoor moisture, aquariums, laundry areas, kitchens, bathrooms, or basements, stop if you are unsure or feel unsafe.
Avoid moving heavy objects, lifting large TVs, reaching behind furniture, or using ladders, chairs, beds, counters, or unstable surfaces to reach equipment. If something needs to be moved, shifted, lifted, adjusted, or cleared for safe access, make sure you have proper help, a spotter, enough space, and a clear path.
Watch for unstable, wobbly, leaning, mounted, stacked, or poorly supported equipment. Do not move TVs, monitors, shelves, stands, wall-mounted devices, racks, speakers, furniture, or anything that could tip, fall, shift, or break. If something feels unstable, stop and get proper help before touching it.
Only unplug, restart, reset, or move something if it is safe to do so. Do not pull cords from damaged outlets, wet areas, hot equipment, tight spaces, unstable furniture, or places where you have to force, yank, climb, twist, or reach awkwardly.
If you are unsure, uncomfortable, or feel unsafe, stop here and do not proceed. Keep children and pets away from unsafe equipment. If a device cools down and the smell, buzzing, sparks, heat, or issue returns after power is restored, stop testing it.
